Incomplete Open Space

Redesigning level 5 of the Matthew building at Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art and Design. By pushing and pulling existing elements within the space, such as the columns it has helped create the sense of incomplete geometric forms. These forms are able to open up and connect the space, allowing users to easily navigate whilst provoking an encouraging experience of the space.

Furniture
These social areas have been equipped with Gambetta Sofas & Chairs designed by Jasper Morrison, both the sofas and chairs help unify the space with their geometric forms and colours which have influenced the colour palette within the space. Although there is now abundant natural light illuminating the space, the Ceiling Light Dau Spot Series Designed by Jordi Jane has been used under the walkways to help add to the atmosphere again with their geometric forms and colours.
Influences
The main influences on this design are The Incomplete Open Cube sculptures created by Sol Lewitt and Anthony Caro’s Millbank Steps Sculpture. These artists have used geometry and angular forms, which are constantly maintained through this project's development. The Basque Liberties Plaza by Eduardo Chillida influenced the pushing and pulling concept, this helped to form and impact the pushed down sections which are used as social areas in this design.
